TELUS has announced today along with its partner Huawei, they have successful completed their 5G wireless pilot using the global 3GPP 5G technology standards platform.

The wireless carrier calls this “one of the most advanced connections yet made using technologies that will form the standard for global 5G.”

With the future advent of 5G wireless technology, consumers will see speeds up to 200 times faster than LTE networks, explains Telus. But this new technology also offers up the opportunity to deliver Wireless-to-the-Premise (WTTx) connectivity, allowing smart homes and businesses get 5G access.

As for how the 5G pilot was setup? It was a “real-world point-to-multi-point connection over commercial central office equipment and transport networks,” with equipment used based on 3GPP 5G over a 28Ghz connection; worldwide 5G standards are yet to be finalized, slated for early 2018. The tests were completed in Vancouver at the TELUS and Huawei 5G Living Lab.

Eros Spadotto, Executive Vice-president of Technology Strategy, TELUS, said in an issued statement to iPhone in Canada, “We are extremely proud that Canadian-led talent and expertise is at the forefront of global 5G research and technology deployment. This is an incredibly rewarding accomplishment for our joint TELUS and Huawei teams who have worked hard to bring truly state-of-the-art technologies to life.”

Last October, TELUS 5G trials achieved speeds up to 29.3 Gbps. The 5G Living Lab also deployed a heterogeneous network (HetNet) in Vancouver—which offers better coverage in crowded areas thanks to combining various technolgoies—along with a Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN), which allows companies to manage multiple cell cites from a centralized location.

Next Wednesday, TELUS will demonstrate the impact that 5G will have on businesses and homes around the world, explains a company spokesperson. The media event at the company’s headquarters in Burnaby, will showcase a live public trial of 5G, plus also detail connected home devices and an interactive VR demo.

The timeline for 5G wireless networks to become available commercially is in early 2020, but TELUS says its customers in Vancouver will have early access to these technologies thanks to the home base of the 5G Living Lab.

Telus expects its 5G development to ramp up by the second half of 2019-2020 fiscal year

By  Rose Behar

FEB 8, 2018

Telus CEO and president Darren Entwistle fielded questions on his company’s plans for 5G at length during the company’s most recent earnings call. Entwistle said developments are already taking place in terms of preparation but that activity will be heightened by the second half of the 2019-2020 fiscal year. He further noted that the carrier plans to deploy all manner of spectrum in support of the new wireless generation, from 600MHz spectrum to 3.5GHz to mmWave spectrum. The CEO also noted he was excited about the “synergistic nature” of the fibre and 5G combination.

“For me, it really made the economics work,” he said. “Now we’re going to get great scope economies across wireline and wireless.” He added that Telus investment in fibre will aid not just with 5G, but also LTE, which is maturing towards gigabit-per-second speeds that will bridge the gap between 4G and 5G. “Whether it’s LTE or 5G, you still need to have fibre deployed deep deep into your access network,” said Entwistle. “I couldn’t picture us being better positioned in that regard.” Entwistle believes Telus’ investment in 5G will pay off, stating: “If you’ve got the fastest speeds and the best coverage and lead the way on realiability, if you can nail that up, I think it’s going to make a difference.” He says it’ll drive value for the company both through greater usage and therefore higher average revenue per user (ARPU) and by drawing new customers to the network. Bell and Rogers’ respective CEOs did not speak at length on 5G plans during their most recent quarterly financial calls. Telus’ recent 5G trials have been in partnership with telecom infrastructure company (and handset manufacturer) Huawei. In July 2017, Telus and Huawei debuted their first multi-point deployment of 5G wireless tech. The telecom reported 8.9 million wireless subscribers in its fourth quarter 2017 financial results, an increase of 3.8 percent from the same period last year.

Scorching-fast 5G performance achieved in live environment as TELUS successfully tests 3.5 GHz spectrum

Friday, December 15, 2017

Wireless speeds faster than 2 Gbps achieved during recent tests in Edmonton

EDMONTON – TELUS is again advancing its network capabilities closer to 5G speeds after successfully completing a live-environment mobile broadband test using 3.5 GHz spectrum. The tests, which took place in suburban northwest Edmonton, achieved download speeds eclipsing 2 Gbps and help to demonstrate how important the 3.5 GHz spectrum is to enabling 5G networks of the future.

As customers demand more of their wireless network, technologies like 3.5 GHz spectrum will enable future 5G networks to deliver faster speeds in more places than ever before. Increasing and extending the reach of a strong, pervasive and reliable wireless signal also helps to supply the connectivity necessary to enable state-of-the-art technologies like driverless cars, home health devices and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Complementing the high-throughput, localized power of technologies like 28 GHz spectrum, which TELUS announced it had successfully tested earlier this year, 3.5 GHz spectrum provides increased capability to cover wide urban areas and inside buildings to deliver true 5G speeds. The tests in Edmonton prove that speeds up to three times faster than current LTE networks are not only achievable, but will become mainstream over the next three years.

“As TELUS continues to test and prove the capabilities of technologies like 3.5 GHz spectrum, we prepare our network for a future where a powerful 5G connection is readily available to keep you and your devices connected, no matter where you are,” said Ibrahim Gedeon, Chief Technology Officer. “With 3.5 GHz spectrum’s ability to penetrate buildings and provide an increased range of coverage in urban and suburban areas, more people will have access to a stronger, faster wireless connection than ever before.”

“For Canada to remain a leader in wireless global innovation and at the forefront of the G8 on wireless speeds, the wireless industry and government needs to prioritize this band of spectrum,” said Eros Spadotto, Executive Vice-president of Technology Strategy. “Given that 3.5 GHz is truly the global band for 5G and the majority of G8 nations have already licensed it, TELUS is committed to helping Canadians and Canadian industry reap the full benefit of all of the innovations that 5G services will enable.”

The success of the live test in Edmonton builds on announcements from TELUS earlier this year about the completion of a 5G wireless connection using millimetre wave spectrum and the successful live tests of Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA), another crucial technology in enabling superior speeds.

Telus, Huawei hail HetNet as ‘significant 5G milestone’

25 Nov 2016

Canadian full-service operator Telus Communications and China’s Huawei Technologies have claimed a ‘significant milestone’ on the road towards 5G with the successful deployment of a Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) in their ‘5G Living Lab’ network in downtown Vancouver. HetNet is recognised as one of the key building blocks for 5G and combines multiple types of cells (such as outdoor macrocells and microcells and indoor picocells) to enhance both coverage and capacity in crowded areas and inside buildings where outdoor signals do not penetrate. The network enables seamless transitions between cell types to ensure uninterrupted streaming of ultra-high-bandwidth applications (such as high-definition video, videoconferencing or cloud-based services) as devices move throughout the network. As data demands on wireless networks increase, HetNet will play a key role in providing an ultra-fast and reliable network experience, especially in dense urban environments, the partners’ press release states.

‘The advancements we are making at the 5G Living Lab are laying the foundation for our next generation of wireless networks,’ said Ibrahim Gedeon, CTO at Telus, adding: ‘These ground-breaking trials will one day enable the likes of driverless cars; smart homes, businesses and cities; new innovations in healthcare; as well as yet-to-be-imagined applications, devices and services powered by dramatically faster and more reliable wireless connections.’

In addition, Telus and Huawei announced they have successfully enabled a C-RAN (Centralised Radio Access Network) across multiple 5G Living Lab sites in Vancouver and are now operating the largest C-RAN deployment in North America. C-RAN is a next-generation network architecture that centralises the management of multiple cell sites, enabling intelligent allocation of radio capacity and improved network throughput in crowded urban areas or at special event locations.
