BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Fire crews are asking people living in Battle Creek’s Washington Heights neighborhood to be vigilant as authorities try to determine what caused a pair of electric meter fires.

The fires happened within a half hour of each other in the 100 block of Oaklawn Avenue, between Kendall and Howland streets.

Consumers Energy was call to the first home after an electric panel began smoking. A company employee was working to power down the system when the situation intensified. Firefighters were then called to the scene around 8:21 a.m.

Firefighters used an extinguisher to squelch that fire. While they were still at the scene, they noticed the second fire around 8:43 a.m.  and called in additional crews. That fire was also stifled using an extinguisher.

No one was injured in either fire.

Fire staff visited each home between Kendall and Howland streets to notify as many people as possible of the situation, as Consumers Energy worked to repair the system.

Some homes may be in the dark until the repairs are complete, which could take a couple hours.
