MAPLE RIDGE – The B.C. Cancer Agency will study a cluster of cancer diagnoses — 10 teachers over several years — at Riverside elementary in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district.
“We think that’s a fairly high number compared to the general population,” said district teachers’ union president Drusilla Wilson.
The school board’s occupational health and safety officer, Judy Dueck, said a “whole bunch of variables” need to be looked at to determine whether this is a cancer cluster or just a coincidence.
“We’re prepared to carry through because the anxiety levels are high,” Dueck said.
The study will be led by the B.C. Cancer Agency, and Dueck is starting to collect data for it, starting with a staff survey at Riverside.
The latest cancer victim from Riverside died on Jan. 2 of brain cancer. However, all her colleagues who have been diagnosed have recovered. The cancer types have ranged from breast cancer, throat and larynx cancer, to leukemia, according to Wilson.

Fourteen people living within a mile of a mobile phone mast that emits one of the highest levels of radiation in the country have died of cancer.
Four of the deaths have been in a cul-de-sac yards from the site.
A further 20 residents have developed tumours in the last seven years, although they have survived.
Those living in the shadow of the mast have begun a campaign for its removal, claiming that it has caused a cancer hotspot. The Health Protection Agency is investigating.
Worried parents are refusing to take their children to the playing fields where the mast is sited for fear of damaging their health.
The mast was erected in 1995 on a disused water tower on the High Acres estate in Kingswinford, near Dudley, West Midlands.
But campaigners claim health problems started among the 700 residents of the estate when more antennae and dishes were added in 2001.
It serves four mobile phone operators.
Experts from the communications watchdog Ofcom, who carried out tests on the mast, say it has the highest radiation level of any phone mast site surveyed in England this year.
However, the radiation was still within UK safety guidelines.
Wendy Baggott, 52, who leads a protest group against the mast, which is only 200 yards from her home, said: ‘It feels like a threatening presence looming all over the neighbourhood.
‘Over the last seven years there have been 14 cancer deaths in the area. Four of those happened in this road. The wellbeing of the whole community is being affected.’
The retired NHS clinical auditor, whose husband Clive has twice contracted skin cancer, said: ‘It is a massive concern to us that there is a children’s play area so near to it.
‘Parents and grandparents around here won’t let their children go there because they are terrified they could get cancer.’
One resident, Michael Morris, died from a brain tumour in 2003 aged 57.
His widow Pamela, 61, said: ‘There have been so many people in the neighbourhood who have died of these cancers.
‘Michael used to take the dogs for walks up there by the tower and I wonder if it might have been that.
When these masts came I think it was when he started to go downhill.’
The 14 deaths have included Betty Genner, who was killed by ovarian cancer in 2003 aged 68, and Dorothy Day, 69, who died two years later from cancer.
Six months ago another woman succumbed to a brain tumour. All of them lived within a mile of the mast.
The Government insists mobile phone masts pose no threat to the public. But some campaigners believe the radiation from masts could be powerful enough to change the composition of body cells, making them more susceptible to cancer.
An Ofcom spokesman said: ‘This is the highest level of exposure that we have recorded in England this year.
‘The tower recorded levels 5,000 times below the safe exposure limit. It was not an excessive level of radiation.
‘Other results around the country have been found to be around similar levels and this is well within the safety limit.’
A spokesman for the Health Protection Agency said: ‘No concerns have been raised by general practitioners or other local health services in the area about any greater than expected numbers or unusual cases of any serious illnesses. ‘Further contact is being made with local general practices to confirm that they do not have any specific concerns.’
But Yasmin Skelt, from pressure group Mast Sanity, which campaigns against the spread of mobile phone masts, said: “The Government keeps refusing to believe there is a problem. China and Russia realise this and keep their limits at a sixtieth of what we have got.
“We are being told nothing about the health effects, agencies that should be helping the British public are not helping. Why are we putting up with it?”

The European parliament voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to push for tougher regulations to keep mobile phone towers and other electromagnetic emitting devices away from schools and to limit cellphone use for children and teenagers because of the “continuing uncertainties about the possible health risks.”
Key parts of the newly endorsed report, backed by 559 of 581 parliamentarians, puts Canada offside with a growing number of international bodies raising concerns about a possible link between wireless technologies and devices and certain types of cancers, including brain cancer. Health Canada maintains the government’s limits of human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radio frequency radiation, set in 1999, adequately protect Canadians, including children, so no warning is necessary.
Noting the use of cellphones has become common place for children as young as 10 as “an object serving a practical purpose and as a fashion accessory,” the newly adopted report by the European Parliament raises special concern over young people “whose brains are still developing.”
The international body representing 492 million people from 27 countries also voted to “draw attention” to the recent “appeal for caution” from Canadian epidemiologist Elisabeth Cardis, co-ordinator of the Interphone study, the largest research project organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer studying 6,400 cellphone users with cancer.
The European parliament’s report notes that Cardis, “in light of existing knowledge, recommends, as far as children are concerned, that mobile phones should not be used beyond reasonable limits.”
In the short term, the parliament is calling on the commission to review “the scientific basis and adequacy of the EMF limits” because “the dispute within the scientific community regarding the potential health risks arising from EMFs has intensified” since the limits were set in 1999. The report also notes that in the absence of “definite conclusions” from the scientific community, China, Russia and at least nine members states of the European Union have already lowered allowable exposure limits based on a “preventive” model. In a statement issued Thursday in the wake of the vote, Health Canada said it is constantly reviewing the scientific literature to make sure Canada’s Safety Code 6, which establishes exposure limits. The limits, last revised in 1999, remain “current and valid,” the department said. “Based on information to date and the weight of evidence from ongoing scientific literature reviewed by Health Canada scientists, the department is confident that the exposure limits specified in Safety Code 6 remain current and valid.”
Health Canada didn’t comment specifically on the “appeal for caution” put forward by Cardis, but the federal agency said its safety code’s “built in margin of safety” means the limits for public exposure apply to everyone, including children. “The limits set out in Safety Code 6 also protect frequent users of cellphones as they assume non-stop usage — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — which is not typical of Canadian cellphone use. As well, tests were performed at peak power levels. Cellphones typically operate at much lower levels.”
However, Health Canada said “parents concerned about their children’s RF exposure may wish to take extra precautions by limiting the use of cellular phones by their children.”
That’s not good enough for Sharon Noble. She and her husband received assurances from municipal and federal officials a few years ago that Safety Code 6 would protect them adequately before they purchased land and built on Triangle Mountain in Colwood, nearly Victoria.
Their home is located within 100 metres of two towers with a total of 140,000 watts and within one kilometre of 45 transmitters, said Noble. She attributes a high concentration of health problems among neighbours to the transmitters.
“It should say to Health Canada ‘open up your eyes,'” Noble said of Health Canada’s position in the face of international pressure.
“The United States and Canada are just about the worst in the world. With all the other countries reacting the way they are in trying to come up more with protective devices and guidelines, Health Canada will not talk about it. They say there’s no credible evidence.”
Britain, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Israel, Russia and India advise that children should limit their use of cellphones. France is moving to make it illegal to market cellphones to children under 12, while Russia recommends children under 18 not use cellphones at all.

A newly published report draws some disturbing conclusions about radiation people are absorbing from cellphone towers and its effects on human health.

Levitt, a medical and science journalist, has been studying radio frequency exposures since the 1970s, and has written two books on the subject. Her latest article appeared online Friday in Envrionmental Reviews, a Canadian journal that publishes peer-reviewed papers summarizing previous scientific studies on environmental topics.Levitt says the exponential growth of wireless use and the accompanying low-level signals are a concern. The paper notes there are now 5.5 billion cellphones in use worldwide. In addition to the cell signals, there are also Wi-Fi networks and Wi-Max, which began rolling out in the U.S. last year and uses lower frequencies with higher power densities.
Similar to cold war embassy bombardment
The results, according to Levitt, are conditions similar to the intentional irradiation of employees at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow starting in 1953 during the Cold War. “We’re getting a mirror effect now, because the exposures close to cell towers now are almost identical in frequency, in signalling characteristics and in long-term low-level chronic exposure duration as that early microwave sickness paper from the irradiation of the Moscow embassy.”
In 1978, researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a study on the long-term effects of that radiation exposure and found it led to several serious health problems. Among them: eczema, psoriasis, allergic and inflammatory reactions, neurological and reproductive problems, tumours and mood disorders such as depression, irritability and lack of concentration.
Levitt says these symptoms have been reflected in other studies on long-term exposure and have been seen in real-world practice. “It is being increasingly reported when anyone looks at the symptoms that are being reported in populations that live near cell towers or low-level infrastructure.”
The medical and scientific community is very much at odds over the impact of cellphone radiation. Health Canada maintains there is no problem.
“Health Canada has reviewed this article and has noted that no new data is presented,” the department said in a statement to CBC News. “As well, the conclusions made by the authors are not based on a full examination of the scientific evidence.”
Many of the studies cited in the article claim biological or harmful health effects may occur at radiofrequency levels below Health Canada’s exposure limits. “As long as exposures respect the limits set in Health Canada’s guidelines, the department has no scientific reason to consider exposure to low-level radiofrequency fields, such as those from cell towers, dangerous to the public,” the statement added.
Environmental Reviews is published by Canadian Science Publishing. Before it became private in September, the online publication was overseen by the National Research Council.

The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) to remove within two weeks the cell phone towers installed atop the terrace and the transformers on the ground floor of a Sion housing society by a private mobile service provider.
Division bench of Justice PB Majmudar and justice RM Sawant took on record the affidavit of the executive engineer of Mhada, Dilip Garje, where he has stated that “within two weeks from Wednesday the society or the mobile company will be liable to remove the towers or else MHADA would remove them and recover the expenses from the society.”
Advocate GW Mattos, appearing for MHADA, said: “The cell towers were erected by the company without proper permissions from the authority. The BMC also had not granted them NOC to erect the towers. Thus, the company and the society cannot claim any equity and make plea for compliance of principles of natural justice.”
Pradeep Shinde, a resident of the Mhada building at Sardar Nagar in Sion Koliwada, had on August 5, 2008 lodged his complaint with MHADA about the towers. The towers were above the bedroom of his house and this lead to leakages and also apparently caused health problems for his family members.When MHADA’s stop work notice to the society did not work, Shinde complained again and MHADA on September 18, 2008 sent a notice to the society.
On May 6, 2009, the society made an ex-post facto application for grant of permission for erecting mobile towers. On August 13, 2009, former MHADA executive engineer informed the company that the society’s proposal was acceptable and called to make a payment of Rs3,50,000. Mhada then granted no-objection certificate, subject to permission from BMC.

Workers say cell tower sites putting them at risk

San Diego – The more we rely on smart phones, the more data we want and the more antennas we need.
Workers say they are getting injured working on these antennas. They say the constant push for more towers is putting them at risk.
Team10 talked to a San Diego company that came up with a solution to keep these people safe.
The Worker
Benjamin Rivas worked on cell phone towers for 14 years.
“I was dealing with them day in and day out–climbing the towers, on the rooftops,” Rivas said.
He left the business after an antenna that should have been powered down was still live.
“It physically burned my hand. You’ll get burned on the outside but internally it blisters.”
The burn is a work injury you can see. Other problems he said caused by the towers are not as easy to spot.
“Depression, I get headaches, mood swings,” Rivas said. “Things I’ve never gotten before.”
Rivas is one of the 250,000 workers that the insurance rating agency AM Best said gets too close to these antennas. They act as an open microwave and can cause eye damage, sterility and cognitive damages.
There are 600,000 cell towers in the United States with thousands more on the way. Sprint just announced installation of 20,000 more towers.
The Problem
Drew Fountain co-founded San Diego-based RF Check. The company tracks where every tower is located in the United States. Fountain showed the RF frequencies coming from several tower sites all over San Diego using a $20,000 meter.
“I’m going to show you the invisible footprints of these potentially hazardous areas that these workers don’t see,” Fountain said.
Fountain said an RF frequency over 20 percent is over the allowable limit by the FCC. He showed Team 10 RF frequency ratings from towers on a Del Mar rooftop that ranged from 20 percent to 150 percent.
Fountain said cell phone tower workers, roofers and painters could be put at risk if they don’t know where those towers are located. Many tower sites have these signs telling workers to stay at least three feet away from the antennas.
“Signs are dismissed by workers,” Fountain said. “This doesn’t even say anything,”
The law requires that the workers be made aware of these areas before they get near them. That’s not being done today.
Since 1985, the FCC has required workers be made aware of these dangers, but the law doesn’t specify how to alert them. The FCC gave notice of a proposed rule change two years ago for the cell companies and site owners to figure out the “how.” Fountain said the FCC tried to make things better for workers but the companies and owners have been slow to act.
“Cell phone providers are looking the other way and not protecting the little guy,” Fountain said.
Rivas claims that if you tell a manager or company about safety concerns, you are let go.
“What we’re told is to just go ahead and work. Get it done,” Rivas said.
The Solution
Fountain helped develop the only database of every wireless antenna system in the nation, so workers could be made aware of the danger before they get to a site. RF Check is working with the FCC to get it used across the entire industry. Workers would check the tower sites before any job.
“If they need to work in those areas they can request a power down through our protocol,” Fountain said.
Rivas believes it could have protected him.
“It would be a savior,” Rivas said.

Jury awards Vermont family $1M for transmission tower

RUTLAND, Vermont
The Vermont Electric Power Company has been ordered to pay $1 million to a Wells couple for a dispute over a transmission tower on their property.
Felix Kniazev and Olga Julinska built a home atop Northeast Mountain right next to a VELCO radio transmission tower. The family lived there happily until the power company began building a larger tower and more powerful transmitter three years ago. The Public Service Board awarded the couple $26,000 for the additional property needed for the new tower. But the couple wanted more, arguing that the microwaves from the tower have destroyed the value of the property.
The jury agreed, ordering VELCO to pay $1 million in compensation.
VELCO officials say they are considering whether to appeal.

Mt. Tabor residents protest cell phone tower project

PORTLAND, Ore. — People living on Mount Tabor are giving T-Mobile an earful over a proposed cell phone tower project in the Southeast Portland neighborhood.
The phone company wants to put it near Southeast 71st Avenue and Yamhill to improve gaps in its coverage area.
Shelly Lufkin, a cancer survivor, is concerned about the radiation from the tower.
“We’re going to be basically under these towers. Or, enough away that we’re right where they emit – 500 feet. We’re just trying to protect our kids. And I don’t want my cancer to come back. Nor do I want anyone else on the street to get sick,” said Lufkin.
Four years ago, Mount Tabor residents fought and won a similar battle against Clearwire.

Mayor Harley Greenfield’s resolution, passed at council’s Nov. 24 meeting, stated: “the Mayor … forward letters to the Canadian Radio Television Telecommunications Commission and Industry Canada explaining our concerns about the Rogers proposal and asking for the responsible approval authorities to refuse the placement of any proposed tower in the urban area.”
“It’s time for the municipality to make a very strong statement,” Greenfield said.
The resolution drew strong support from council, with only coun. Lynda Stephens questioning its timing. Stephens suggested it be tabled for the new council to decide, but council chose to press ahead.
Coun. Barb Clumpus wondered what implications the resolution would have down the road. Clumpus said she believes communications companies wanting to increase service in Meaford should pursue small cell technology or fibre optics.
Coun. Mike Poetker admitted he had mixed feelings about the entire matter.
“We’re in the position to initiate a push of a large telecom to use fibre or micro-cell technology, but I’m still fearful that could play the big bully on us,” he said.
Todd White of CRINS attended the meeting and offered his opinion about the resolution.
White said a resolution attempting to impose a moratorium on cell towers could be a problem, however he said it is reasonable for council to request towers not be built in the urban area.
White said it is important Meaford does not put itself in the position of forcing communications companies to start “side stepping” council.
“I don’t want us to lose the ability to have dialogue with Rogers or Bell or any other carriers that show up,” he said.

Cell-tower policy must protect people
- Edna Pettipas is suing telecommunications giant Bell Aliant for harm and suffering she claims is due to a cell tower near her Nova Scotia home. That harm and suffering includes breast cancer and a myriad of symptoms experienced by her husband. Someone with modest financial means does not do this on a whim. Win or lose, this case has once again catapulted the issue of risk of harm from radiation emitted by cell antennas back into the public eye.
Winnipeggers are gradually waking up to this odourless and invisible threat to our health. City Coun. Russ Wyatt connected the dots at the standing committee on property and development meeting on April 14 when he questioned planning department staff who had just presented the supposedly improved Winnipeg antenna systems policy. Wyatt summed up the process as “draconian,” as indeed it is.
Industry Canada has supreme say on where cell towers can be located and says all is fine health wise if antenna emissions are kept below Safety Code 6 guidelines. However, their website statement “there is no scientific or medical evidence that a person will experience adverse health effects” if Safety Code 6 is followed, is misleading. While not having a “slam dunk” study showing cause and effects, there are plenty of studies with evidence of potential harm.
Safety Code 6 is Canada’s guideline for “safe” exposure to radiation of the kind that is emitted by antennas installed on towers and high buildings and, if the proposed policy is passed, could appear unannounced on a lamp post outside your front door.
Health Canada sets Safety Code 6 and it has been highly secretive about which scientific evidence it uses to assess safety. Appeals to the minister of Health, and access to information requests have failed to uncover this information. Now, finally, the House of Commons standing committee on health (HESA) hearings are shining a light on the inner workings of Health Canada. It is not reassuring.
Dr. James McNamee, lead author of Safety Code 6, upon heavy pressure at the hearing on March 24, finally relented and produced a list of 36 studies that would be acceptable for assessing risk. A close look reveals 26 show evidence of harm at below Safety Code 6 levels, including brain and breast cancer, sperm abnormalities and DNA damage. One showed an association with behavioural effects in children whose mothers used cell phones while pregnant.
In addition, the committee learned Dr. Lennart Hardell, a Swedish brain cancer epidemiologist, is calling for an upgrade to the 2011 World Health Organization classification of wireless radiation from a possible to a known carcinogen. On top of that, a new replicated animal study by Dr. Alexander Lerchl of Jacobs University in Germany has shown this type of radiation, below accepted limits, could “obviously enhance the growth of tumours.”
Winnipeg council’s proposed policy states in a footnote: “The city does not assess any submission… with respect to health and radiofrequency exposures.”
It does not have to be that way.
Safety Code 6 is a guideline — it has no force in law or legislation. For example, Toronto has 100 times safer limits than Safety Code 6. In a precedent-setting case, the Supreme Court of Quebec ruled in favour of the City of Chateauguay, which opposed the site where Rogers wanted to put an antenna tower. The judge stated Chateauguay acted “to protect the well-being of its citizens, which is a municipal purpose.” The mayor of Chateauguay was quoted as saying “The Court of Appeal is clear: the cities can decide what type of development that it wishes to have on its territory. It is also a beautiful victory for the citizens whose opinion was a determining factor in this decision.”
Mayor Brian Bowman and most city councillors came in with a platform of improving public consultation for Winnipeggers. Here is a perfect opportunity to show they meant it.
Let’s make the best of a bad situation. Insist that the mayor and council bring in the best policy they can. The property and development committee needs to ask the planning department staff to go back to the drawing board. The new policy should provide improved notification: posting of any proposed antenna on the city of Winnipeg website is one example, and providing people with a genuine chance to voice their concerns — not just by letter, as is now proposed.
And most importantly, the city planning department must conduct public consultations with all stakeholders, including the most important ones, the residents of Winnipeg who must live with the long term consequences of the radiation emitted from these structures.
Don’t Winnipeggers deserve the same chance to be heard as the citizens of Chateauguay?

The location of mobile phone masts has caused controversy
Phone masts for the high-tech third generation mobile phones cause headaches and nausea, researchers have claimed.
Dutch government scientists looked at the signals transmitted by base stations for the new phones.
They operate at a higher frequency than those for traditional mobiles.
But mobile phone manufacturers and radiation experts said more research was needed before it could be concluded that the phone masts damaged health.
The first third-generation mobile phone network opened in the UK in March this year.
The technology allows callers to see each other and send video footage via their phone.
Campaigners have expressed concerns that radiation from mobile phones could be linked to conditions ranging from cancer to blood clots in the brain.
‘Significant’
The Dutch study exposed volunteers in laboratories to radiation from 3G and “traditional” masts – without telling them which version they were being exposed to.
Seventy-two people took part in the study, half of whom had complained about the health effects of living near traditional mobile masts.
The survey found both those who had complained about mobile phones radiation – and even those who had not – complained about significant levels of nausea, headaches and tingling sensations when they were exposed to signals that mimicked third generation mobile networks.
A spokesman for the Dutch Economics Ministry, said: “If the test group was exposed to third generation base station signals, there was a significant impact.
“They felt tingling sensations, got headaches and felt nauseous.”
In contrast, exposure to radiation from standard masts showed no significant effect.
Maarten Lortzer, a spokesman for the Dutch research organisation TNO, which carried out the research on behalf of the government, told BBC News Online: “These findings were very unexpected.
“It means that there are a whole lot of other questions coming up.”
He said other studies needed to be carried out to confirm the finding.

Dr Mike Clark, scientific spokesman for the National Radiological Protection Board, said mobile phone users should not be worried.
“Until the finding is repeated, they should not be concerned. We can’t rely on one study, however good the research and the organisation behind it. It does need to be replicated.”
He said similar research would be carried out as part of UK’s Mobile Telecommunications Health Research Programme.
The GSM Association, which represents mobile phone companies, said: “As the effects are small, it is unclear whether they have any health significance.”
A spokesman for Ericsson, said: “Our position is that there is no scientific evidence that there are any health problems associated with radio waves from mobile communications.”
A major long-term study looking at the health risk of mobile phones is currently being carried out by the International Agency on Research on Cancer.

Parents complain about cell phone tower project

HOUGHTON – Several parents expressed their opposition to a proposed cell phone tower on Houghton-Portage Township Schools land south of Houghton Elementary School, complaining about what they believe are needless health risks and a lack of transparency.
The Houghton Zoning Board of Appeals approved the district’s request for a variance to build an 80-foot cell tower on the property at its meeting last Wednesday.
The issue next moves to the Houghton County Planning Commission, which would have to approve the site plan.
The American Cancer Society has concluded cell phone towers would be unlikely to cause cancer, due to the low level of radio frequency waves at ground level and the low energy level of radio frequency waves.
But Kristina Sundstrom, a parent from Chassell, pointed to several sources on the danger posed by cell phones or towers, including a Wall Street Journal article showing 10 percent of cell phone towers emit more radiation than the FCC allows.
She said she would be pulling her child from the school because of her concerns for safety.
“Have you considered that if just one student at the Houghton Elementary School ends up with a brain tumor or cancer, and there is enough scientific data to file a lawsuit, even if the parents don’t win in court, the school would have to spend a considerable amount of money in the process?” she said.
Parent Lindsay Johnson said the $12,000 a year from the lease wasn’t enough to justify possible dangers. She also said parents should have been notified about the issue.
Board President Brad Baltensperger said Verizon had approached the district about a year ago. The district saw the tower as a way to obtain additional funds for school district operations, he said.
“The school district, like all other districts in the Upper Peninsula, has been facing serious problems with resources, and we take a serious look not only at all of our expenses, but all of our opportunities to generate revenue that will help us operate the schools in the matter that we feel they should,” he said.

Hi I live in Langley bc. We have a nonprofit elderly care facility in Langley call TheLangley Lodge. There are at least 20 towers on the roof of this building. It’s non profit but I know companies rent space? Isn’t that illegal? I had asked for a list of names of those providers to find out the exposure emitted from each tower. The supervisor said she was not obligated to tell me. Legally as citizens and friends living in the facility do we had a right to know. Where do we go from here?. Side affects for the elderly could so easily be explained away. Do we have any legal standing as far as finding out mortality rate.?.The facility has one doctor for all the patients. Iam so new at this but it’s happening right down the street from me. I don’t think it should be allowed. Thx for any info u can offer.
