The time is finally here: FortisBC will begin replacing electricity meters in the Kelowna area next week.<\/p>\n

Corporate Communications Advisor David Wylie says they will start installing the smart meters in Joe Rich, Black Mountain and parts of Rutland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first contact would actually be a piece of mail that was sent directly to customers, letting them know a few weeks in advance that we\u2019re going to be exchanging their meter at the property,\u201d explains Wylie.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the day of the exchange, they\u2019ll see one of our meter installers from our authorized contractor Corix Utilities. The meter installer will knock on the door to let the customer know we\u2019re there and what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those homes can expect a brief power outage \u2013 expected to last a few minutes \u2013 while the old meters are replaced with the new, controversial advanced metering systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t need to be home for the exchange, and they don\u2019t need to make appointments. We can do the exchange while nobody\u2019s there and we will be sure to leave some information on the door so (the customer) knows the meter has been exchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics of the smart meter bring forward several issues, such as sensitivity to the electromagnetic radio frequency of the device, worries about possible fire hazards, and possible violations of privacy due to detailed records of power consumption.<\/p>\n

Fortis will also be offering a \u2018radio off\u2019 option available to anyone who doesn\u2019t want the new meters, but that comes with an additional cost.<\/p>\n

Wylie says there are actually two fees associated with this option: one is the initial fee ($60) and the other fee ($18) is charged every two months with each bill of service.<\/p>\n

He also points out that the initial fee goes up to $88 if Fortis is contacted after the new meter is already installed.<\/p>\n

Following the installment of smart meters in Kelowna, Fortis crews will begin work in the South Okanagan with a projected start date in May 2015.<\/p>\n

Fortis will begin installing smart meters in Kelowna homes next week.<\/p>\n

Installation of the new meters will start in Joe Rich, Black Mountain and parts of Rutland.<\/p>\n

In a news release, Fortis said customers will see its crews and installers from Corix Utilities in their neighbourhoods in the coming weeks and months, as the meter exchanges continue in Kelowna through the first few months of 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Meter installers will carry identification and be easily identifiable as FortisBC contractors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fortis will notify customers by mail a few weeks before the electricity meter is to be exchanged at a property.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fortis has been installing meters in the Trail-Salmo area since September.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Once the project is complete in late 2015, the new meters will open the door to benefits our customers are asking for, like fewer bill estimates, up-to-date electricity use information, and a more efficient response to power outages,” says Fortis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Smart meters are controversial with many critics claiming they emit dangerous electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Some jurisdictions have removed smart meters or stopped their installation programs after fires were reported in the units.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

BC Hydro has already installed the units across the province.<\/p>\n
