Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries are in a number of Smart Meters and Smart Gas Meters.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

These batteries are a concern due to the reaction when lithium thionyl chloride is involved in a smart meter fire.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Extinguisher Media: Lith-X powder, Class D fire extinguisher, Dry<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Lithium Chloride, Graphite Powder, Pyrene G-1.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Special Fire Fighting Procedures: <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Cover with Lith-X powder, Class D,\u00a0fire extinguisher, dry lithium chloride, or graphite powder.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

DO NOT USE WATER<\/strong>, moist sand, CO2, Class ABC, or soda ash extinguisher.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Wear protective breathing apparatus; a positive pressure Self Contained\u00a0Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), or Air Purifying Respirator (APR). \u00a0Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Do not short circuit, recharge,\u00a0over discharge (discharge below 0.0 Volts), puncture, crush or expose\u00a0to temperatures above 150oC. Cell may leak, vent, or explode. If a\u00a0bright white flame is present, lithium content is exposed and on fire; \u00a0used a Class D fire extinguisher. Do not use water.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ITRON clearly stating that\u00a0CENTRON C1S, C1SR and others have a Battery inside\u00a0on Measurement Canada \/ Industry Canada :<\/p>\n

“Meters intended for time-of-use metering shall\u00a0be fitted with a lithium battery.\u00a0Demand is not approved for time- of-use.”<\/p>\n

“Battery – The OpenWay CENTRON <\/strong>polyphase meter contains a battery<\/strong><\/span> that\u00a0powers the clock circuit during a power outage. The battery is\u00a0permanently soldered to the module and is expected to last the life of\u00a0the meter.”<\/p>\n

“TOU\/Load Profile Functionality – \u00a0All OpenWay meters have a permanently installed battery from the\u00a0factory. The battery allows the timekeeping circuitry in the meter to\u00a0maintain the meter’s clock during an outage. Load Profile data is\u00a0periodically committed to flash as described in the Load Profile\u00a0section. If a battery goes dead on a TOU\/Load Profile meter during an\u00a0outage, then the meter’s clock will be off by the duration of the\u00a0outage and the TOU data and some Load Profile data will be lost.\u00a0Upon the return of proper AC power, the register undergoes a procedure\u00a0similar to the initial power-up. The meter performs self-diagnostic\u00a0checks, data is retrieved from non-volatile memory, and normal\u00a0operation is resumed. The number of minutes of power outage maintained\u00a0while the meter was in carry-over operation is added to the Time on\u00a0Battery register.”<\/p>\n
