Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) says, \u201c5G wireless has the potential to be a game changer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But to pave the way for that game change, telecom companies need to put up between <strong>30,000 and 50,000<\/strong> of cell antennas \u2014 including in your town \u2014 over the next five years with only limited local say.<\/p>\n<p>San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said, \u201cNeighborhoods would be seeing something the size of refrigerators going up on street poles and could say nothing to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solano County Supervisor Erin Hannigan said, \u201cCould be on a library, could be on a school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn traffic signals, light polls,\u201d Liccardo said.\u00a0\u201cThis would give the companies the right to install on any public infrastructure and we would have zero ability to say \u2018no.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the new network could also mean much faster Internet service to keep California on the innovation forefront.<\/p>\n<p>The use of smart devices and mobile Internet has increased 2,300 percent statewide since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Carlson with CTIA-Wireless Association said, \u201cCalifornia was the epicenter of the last Internet revolution and can and should be the epicenter of the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huesso said, \u201cBusiness investment and job creation will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for local say?<\/p>\n<p>Huesso said, it \u201cpreserves local government right for reasonable concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also the issue of money.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules would cap how much local jurisdictions could charge telecom companies at $250 per antenna, a far cry from the $1,250 that cities like San Jose now get.<\/p>\n<p>Liccardo said, \u201cYou are talking about an industry that will net $500 billion after full build out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Telecom contributed $2.4 million to California\u2019s Democratic and Republican parties in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"personality-credits\"><strong>Phil Matier<\/strong><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section><a href=\"http:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2017\/06\/28\/plan-install-50000-cell-towers-california-opposition\/\">http:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2017\/06\/28\/plan-install-50000-cell-towers-california-opposition\/<\/a><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section>small cell, \u00a0eNodeB, antenna, microcell, \u00a0radiation, california<\/section>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plan To Install 50,000 Cell Towers In California Faces\u00a0Opposition June 28, 2017 7:48 PM\u00a0By Phil Matier Filed Under:\u00a0Cell Towers,\u00a0Internet,\u00a0San Jose WALNUT CREEK (KPIX 5) \u2013 Up to 50,000 cell phone towers coming to cities across California.
