(Adam Hunter\/CBC)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;I&#8217;m glad it happened today,&#8217; says homeowner just back from holiday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/cbc-news-online-news-staff-list-1.1294364\">CBC News<\/a>\u00a0Posted: Jul 31, 2017 9:45 PM CT\u00a0Last Updated: Jul 31, 2017 9:45 PM CT<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ground shifting due to the dry conditions caused yet another power meter fire in Regina on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>This time the meter caught on fire at a home on\u00a0Pettingell\u00a0Street in north Regina.<\/p>\n<p>Homeowner Paul Schubert said he was sitting in his backyard on Monday evening, just back this week from holiday, when he heard what sounded like a garage door opener.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then when I went and looked, it was the meter caught in flames and burning up one side of the house.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He got a fire extinguisher from the house to try and fight the flames. He said a neighbour had to call the fire department for them as Schubert&#8217;s home had lost power.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/saskpower-meter-fires-1.4226974\">SaskPower repairs meter boxes in &#8216;several hundred&#8217; homes, expands inspections<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/power-meter-fire-regina-1.4230044\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-10876\" alt=\"Watch Video\" src=\"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sask_fire_2017.jpg\" width=\"605\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sask_fire_2017.jpg 864w, https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sask_fire_2017-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This would be about the sixth meter to catch fire in Regina in recent weeks. SaskPower\u00a0said the fire was caused by the same\u00a0situation as the others: extreme dry conditions causing\u00a0ground shift that pulled wires out from behind the power box.<\/p>\n<p>SaskPower has been urging residents to check\u00a0their power meter boxes to see if they have tilted, and check for significant gaps between the\u00a0house and the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Schubert said he had heard about the fires while he was away.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we were on holidays I&#8217;m going &#8216;I don&#8217;t want anything like that to happen while my daughter&#8217;s taking care of the house,'&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And for it to happen today, well, I&#8217;m glad it happened today and not while they were here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said SaskPower told them they may have power back tonight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/power-meter-fire-regina-1.4230044\">http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatchewan\/power-meter-fire-regina-1.4230044<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The charred remains of a power meter after a fire at a home on Pettingell Street in Regina Monday evening.
