(CBSNewYork)\u00a0\u2014 Long Island residents are raising health concerns as cellphone transmission\u00a0equipment\u00a0continues to be installed in many areas.<\/p>\n<p>As CBS2\u2019s Jennifer McLogan reported, some neighbors are joining together to fight towers going up close to their\u00a0homes, schools and houses of worship.<\/p>\n<p>Jodi and Peter Abraham anxiously clutched their just-filed federal lawsuit as they walked out of Nassau County Supreme Court Thursday, challenging hundreds of unregulated and\u00a0wireless\u00a0facilities, still going up by the dozens across Huntington and Oyster Bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not anti-tech. We are not anti-cellphone,\u201d Peter Abraham said. \u201cBut we believe\u00a0cell\u00a0towers should be put up in a responsible way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2016\/12\/07\/cbs2-exclusive-li-residents-concerned-about-cell-phone-poles\/\">The Abrahams called CBS2 to their home last December<\/a>, when in an overnight period, they said a pole with a wireless box was installed on the edge of their front\u00a0property. They confronted the installer \u2013 Crown Castle \u2013 and the town for an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a voice,\u201d said Jodi Abraham. \u201cAnd I want my town to stand up for us \u2013 you know, their residents. And they have told us their\u00a0hands\u00a0have been tied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Huntington town official explained the stated purpose of the cell towers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrown Castle has told the town that this is designed to fill in gaps in cellphone\u00a0service\u00a0in the town,\u201d said Town of Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter.<\/p>\n<p>As they joined hands in front of the courthouse, worried\u00a0homeownerssaid the law must be changed to stop the new towers from being allowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an issue that is critical \u2014 not just to all of Long Island, but all of the United States,\u201d said plaintiffs\u2019 attorney Andrew Campanelli, \u201cbecause across the United States, no wireless facilities are being tested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some call it a microwave brew \u2013 steps from their bedroom windows. Are radio frequency emissions mushrooming out to envelop nearby schools and churches?<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission has RF thresholds, but the agency says it has not enough resources to test them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s monitoring that what the FCC says is a \u2018safe limit\u2019 is actually what\u2019s coming out of these things?\u201d said Oyster Bay homeowner Sandra Decker. \u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, several California communities are requiring wireless installers to pay for independent safety checks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that technology is moving forward.
