Mike McKinnon explains how much this is going to cost.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h1>SaskPower identifies 2 more smart meter failures<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Saskatoon homeowner Brad McNairn is the seventh of eight homeowners to have a smart meter catch fire<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/cbc-news-online-news-staff-list-1.1294364\">CBC News<\/a>\u00a0Posted: Jul 28, 2014 11:27 AM CT\u00a0Last Updated: Jul 29, 2014 6:29 AM CT<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatoon\/saskpower-identifies-2-more-smart-meter-failures-1.2720359\">http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatoon\/saskpower-identifies-2-more-smart-meter-failures-1.2720359<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At a media availability Monday morning to report on Saskatchewan\u2019s seventh smart meter failure this year,\u00a0SaskPower\u00a0confirmed crews had just been dispatched to an eighth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_11_0_3_1406792133625_28\">SaskPower\u00a0put the smart meter program on hold after six meters caught fire between May and July this year. Since then, the utility has been investigating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start having meter incidents, we as a company are concerned,\u201d Mike March, SaskPower\u2019s vice-president of operations, said Monday. \u201cPeople need to know the failure rates are still within what the industry calls normal, but we are concerned about any failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smart meters, which are manufactured by Sensus Corporation, allow\u00a0SaskPower\u00a0to bill customers for the power they use each month rather than relying on estimates between meter readings. The utility introduced the replacement program in October of 2013 and since it installed more than 100,000 meters in the province before putting the program on hold.<\/p>\n<h2>No cause identified<\/h2>\n<p>Officials with the utility say they still have not narrowed down a cause for the fires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe type of meter failure is really specific in every case,\u201d Marsh said. \u201cIn some cases there have been meter socket issues, in the past and I know some of the manufacturers point to that as the reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A company called Grid One Solutions is supervising the deployment of the meters.\u00a0The actual meter installers are\u00a0SaskPower\u00a0employees who are not journeymen.\u00a0SaskPower\u00a0doesn\u2019t believe that has anything to do with the failures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are not qualified electricians,\u201d Marsh said. \u201cBut in most jurisdictions in North America, a competent worker is what is used to install the smart meters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The utility had little information about the eighth smart meter fire except that it happened around 10 a.m. CST Monday in the College Park area of Saskatoon and that it was likely similar to the one that happened Saturday.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 itemprop=\"name\">Saskatchewan government orders SaskPower to pull out its smart meters<\/h1>\n<p>July 30, 2014\u00a0<strong>Updated :<\/strong>\u00a0July 30, 2014 | 6:21 pm<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/metronews.ca\/news\/regina\/1113295\/saskatchewan-government-orders-saskpower-to-pull-out-its-smart-meters\/\">http:\/\/metronews.ca\/news\/regina\/1113295\/saskatchewan-government-orders-saskpower-to-pull-out-its-smart-meters\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SaskPower initially gave people the option of switching back to their old power meters.<\/p>\n<p>About 530 customers took the utility up on the offer.<\/p>\n<p>SaskPower says on its website that it is developing a plan to replace the smart meters quickly and safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concerns about safety are paramount here,\u201d Boyd said Wednesday. \u201cWe believe that any time families are at risk here in Saskatchewan actions have to be taken and that\u2019s why we have directed SaskPower accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Marsh with SaskPower acknowledged earlier this week that the situation was extremely serious.<\/p>\n<p>A smart meter records consumption of electric energy in small intervals and can relay the information electronically to a power company.
