Supreme Court hearing, which was adjourned until Monday<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-details byline\">\n<div class=\"author-wrap\"><span class=\"name\">REUTERS<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"byline-dates\">Updated: December 8, 2018<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>BEIJING\/OTTAWA \u2014 China warned Canada on Saturday that there would be severe consequences if it did not immediately release Huawei Technologies Co Ltd\u2019s chief financial officer, calling the case \u201cextremely nasty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meng Wanzhou, Huawei\u2019s global chief financial officer, was arrested in Canada on Dec. 1 and faces extradition to the <a class=\"auto-link\" title=\"United States\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/tag\/united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>, which alleges that she covered up her company\u2019s links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The executive is the daughter of the founder of Huawei.<\/p>\n<p>If extradited to the U.S., Meng would face charges of conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions, a Canadian court heard on Friday, with a maximum sentence of 30 years for each charge.<\/p>\n<p>No decision was reached at the extradition hearing after nearly six hours of arguments and counter-arguments, and the hearing was adjourned until Monday.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"related_links\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/world\/chinese-telecom-executive-due-to-appear-in-vancouver-court-for-bail-hearng\">Huawei exec accused of fraud for violating sanctions against Iran<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/meng-whanzous-rise-through-the-ranks-at-huawei\">Meng Wanzhou\u2019s rise through the ranks at Huawei<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a short statement, China\u2019s Foreign Ministry said that Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng had issued the warning to release Meng to Canada\u2019s ambassador in Beijing, summoning him to lodge a \u201cstrong protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate reaction from the office of Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on Saturday. When asked about the possible Chinese backlash after the arrest of Huawei\u2019s CFO, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Friday that Canada has a very good relationship with Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s arrest of Meng at the request of the U.S. while she was changing plane in Vancouver was a serious breach of her lawful rights, Le said.<\/p>\n<p>The move \u201cignored the law, was unreasonable\u201d and was in its very nature \u201cextremely nasty,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina strongly urges the Canadian side to immediately release the detained person, and earnestly protect their lawful, legitimate rights, otherwise Canada must accept full responsibility for the serious consequences caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will probably be a deep freeze with the Chinese in high-level visits and exchanges,\u201d David Mulroney, former Canadian ambassador to China, said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to talk about free trade will be put in the ice box for a while. But we\u2019re going to have to live with that.
