Canada arrests Huawei\u2019s global chief financial officer in Vancouver<\/u><\/b><\/h2>\n

\u201cCanada has arrested the chief financial officer of China\u2019s Huawei Technologies, who now faces extradition to the United States on suspicion she violated U.S. trade sanctions against Iran.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Meng Wanzhou, who is also the deputy chair of Huawei\u2019s board and the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested on Saturday in Vancouver at the request of American law enforcement authorities\u2026<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a member of the U.S. Senate intelligence committee, lauded Canada for the arrest of Ms. Meng and once again urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to bar Huawei from 5G technology.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cHuawei has direct ties to the Chinese government and Communist Party, has long posed a serious risk to U.S. national security, and I continue to strongly urge Canada to reconsider Huawei\u2019s inclusion in any aspect of its 5G development, introduction, and maintenance,\u201d Mr. Rubio said in a statement to The Globe.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s Spy Chief Warns About State-Sponsored Espionage To 5G Networks<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/h2>\n

\u201c\u201cWith 4G there are specific modes of technology and we developed a very good understanding with Huawei of where we were able to monitor and look at that aspect of their offer,\u201d Mr. Younger said, referring to Britain\u2019s Huawei testing facilities that are staffed by former intelligence officers. \u201cThat is impossible with 5G.”\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

A ban would come as a blow to Canada\u2019s biggest telecom companies, including BCE Inc. and Telus, which have given Huawei an important role in their planned 5G networks. BCE and Telus have declined to comment on a Wall Street Journal report that the United States has asked telecom executives in allied countries to forgo Huawei 5G equipment.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Canada has testing facilities similar to Britain where independent labs \u2013 funded by Huawei but staffed by independent experts \u2013 test the Chinese company\u2019s equipment and software for security flaws.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

In late September, Scott Jones, the new head of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, which is part of the Communications Security Establishment, rejected the idea of blocking Huawei, telling MPs that the country\u2019s safeguards are adequate to mitigate against any risk.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

BEIJING\/OTTAWA \u2014 China warned Canada on Saturday that there would be severe consequences if it did not immediately release Huawei Technologies Co Ltd\u2019s chief financial officer, calling the case \u201cextremely nasty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei\u2019s global chief financial officer, was arrested in Canada on Dec. 1 and faces extradition to the United States<\/a>, which alleges that she covered up her company\u2019s links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions.<\/p>\n

The executive is the daughter of the founder of Huawei.<\/p>\n

If extradited to the U.S., Meng would face charges of conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions, a Canadian court heard on Friday, with a maximum sentence of 30 years for each charge.<\/p>\n

No decision was reached at the extradition hearing after nearly six hours of arguments and counter-arguments, and the hearing was adjourned until Monday.<\/p>\n
