(Elise Amendola\/The Associated Press)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>Some residents of a town southwest of Ottawa\u00a0are urging telecommunications giant\u00a0Rogers to rethink its plan to build a cell\u00a0tower on a hill overlooking their\u00a0community.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people attended a Tay Valley Township meeting Tuesday to voice their concerns about the nearly 90-metre-tall\u00a0tower proposed for Maberly, Ont.\u00a0\u2014 including what its installation could mean for their health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s basically 400 metres from the whole village,&#8221; said longtime resident Lloyd Scott, whose home would sit beneath the tower at\u00a0472 Maberly\u00a0Elphin Rd.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The radiation, from what I&#8217;ve read, is 100 times greater within that 400-metre range.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>No cancer risk,\u00a0WHO says<\/h2>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), studies published over the past 15 years have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/peh-emf\/publications\/facts\/fs304\/en\/\">unable to show any connection<\/a> between exposure to radiofrequency (RF) signals emitted by cell\u00a0towers and increased cancer risk \u2014 or any other long-term or short-term health effects, for that matter.<\/p>\n<p>While there have been media reports of &#8220;cancer clusters&#8221; around cell\u00a0towers, the WHO said\u00a0it&#8217;s expected such clusters would occur simply by chance, given how widespread such towers are.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p><span class=\"text-items\"><span class=\"pullquote-quotation\">I would think half a mile [away from the town] would be somewhat acceptable.<\/span><cite class=\"pullquote-source\">&#8211; Lloyd Scott, resident of Maberly, Ont.<\/cite><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to a staff report\u00a0produced for Tuesday&#8217;s committee-of-the-whole meeting,\u00a0Rogers\u00a0had previously told Tay Valley Township it was complying with Health Canada&#8217;s\u00a0regulations around safe levels of RF exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Scott called those regulations\u00a0&#8220;outdated,&#8221; and cited a different\u00a0study \u2014 one carried out in Germany over a decade that argued\u00a0people living within 400 metres of a tower are three times more likely to develop cancer.<\/p>\n<p>He told CBC Radio&#8217;s\u00a0<em>All In A Day<\/em>\u00a0that if Rogers were to move the tower farther\u00a0from the community, it would allay some of the residents&#8217; concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would think half a mile [away from the town] would be somewhat acceptable. If that proves impossible, Rogers should report &#8220;the results of physical monitoring of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields every two years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scott said township council seemed &#8220;sincerely concerned&#8221; about what Maberly residents were bringing forward and would not give Rogers &#8220;a clear go-ahead&#8221; for the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A\u00a0division of the government of Canada, from my understanding, may have the final say.
