{"id":15901,"date":"2019-10-31T11:40:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T18:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=15901"},"modified":"2019-10-31T12:52:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T19:52:13","slug":"waterfront-toronto-board-votes-to-keep-sidewalk-labs-quayside-project-alive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=15901","title":{"rendered":"Waterfront Toronto board votes to keep Sidewalk Labs&#8217; Quayside project alive"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"deck\">Google sister company&#8217;s proposal has previously been criticized for lack of detail, privacy concerns<\/h2>\n<div class=\"byline\">\n<div class=\"bylineDetails\">CBC News<span class=\"bullet\"> \u00b7 <\/span><time class=\"timeStamp\" datetime=\"2019-10-31T14:29:41.320Z\">Posted: Oct 31, 2019 8:50 AM ET | Last Updated: 3 hours ago<\/time><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>Waterfront Toronto&#8217;s board voted unanimously Thursday to move ahead into an evaluation phase of Sidewalk Labs&#8217; proposed Quayside development\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 a so-called &#8220;smart city&#8221; that would be built on the shore of Lake Ontario in the city&#8217;s east end.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides had set an Oct. 31 deadline to resolve issues including the project&#8217;s scale, public transit commitments, developer selection, and privacy and data issues before going further in the process.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/toronto-sidewalk-labs-plan-1.5187877\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Sidewalk Labs releases plan for controversial Toronto development amid concerns about privacy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/sidewalk-labs-panel-1.5278903\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Advisory panel raises range of concerns about Sidewalk Labs&#8217; plans for Quayside<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>With approval of the terms, Sidewalk&#8217;s proposal will move to a formal evaluation and further public consultations with a final vote on whether to approve the project set for March 31.<\/p>\n<p>Sidewalk Labs has agreed to realign the size of the development to a 4.8-hectare site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/toronto-sidewalk-labs-plan-1.5187877\">rather than the 77-hectare site it proposed in June<\/a>, which would have incorporated the Port Lands which are already being redeveloped.<\/p>\n<p>The Google sister company had also wanted Waterfront Toronto to publicly commit to fund and deliver the Waterfront LRT\u00a0before moving ahead with the construction of Quayside.<\/p>\n<p>But Waterfront Toronto, as a tri-government agency, does not have jurisdiction over public transit funding allocation and therefore no promise of the transit project&#8217;s delivery is included in the agreement between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p>Sidewalk Labs has also dropped its plan for an urban data trust and instead will adhere to existing laws and store all\u00a0public data collected in Quayside in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Waterfront will lead a competitive bid for vertical development teams for the project, rather than Sidewalk.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/who-owns-the-data-questions-emerge-at-sidewalk-labs-consultations-about-1-500-page-proposal-1.5215990\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">&#8216;Who owns the data?&#8217;: Questions emerge at Sidewalk Labs consultations about 1,500-page proposal <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/politicians-business-leaders-want-sidewalk-labs-project-scrapped-1.5023860\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Sidewalk Toronto faces growing opposition, calls to cancel project<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Toronto Mayor John Tory released a statement welcoming news of the vote result.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all know that we must develop our waterfront in the right way \u2014\u00a0that&#8217;s why we are moving through this process so carefully,&#8221; Tory said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe this process has led to an exciting proposal for Quayside that has the potential to create new jobs and economic development opportunities, a carbon-neutral neighbourhood, and more affordable housing units.
