It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-officials-say-huawei-can-covertly-access-telecom-networks-11581452256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\" data-ml-dynamic=\"true\" data-ml-dynamic-type=\"vg\" data-orig-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-officials-say-huawei-can-covertly-access-telecom-networks-11581452256\" data-ml-id=\"0\" data-ml=\"true\" data-xid=\"fr1581605055401egc\" data-feature=\"null,track_events\">been using backdoors intended for law enforcement for over a decade<\/a>, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing US officials. The details were disclosed to the UK and Germany at the end of 2019 after the US had noticed access since 2009 across 4G equipment, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakableTextP2\">The backdoors were inserted for law enforcement use into carrier equipment like base stations, antennas and switching gear, the Journal said, with US officials reportedly alleging they were designed to be accessible by Huawei.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have evidence that Huawei has the capability secretly to access sensitive and personal information in systems it maintains and sells around the world,&#8221; Robert O&#8217;Brien, national security adviser, reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Brien also called <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kylieatwood\/status\/1227380436848041985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\">less-expensive Chinese solutions &#8220;tempting<\/a> of a gift to turn down&#8221; for some countries, according to CNN, but that they come &#8220;with a price&#8221; of the Chinese company having access to information on the network.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Huawei denied the reports, saying it&#8217;s the US government that&#8217;s been &#8220;covertly accessing telecom networks worldwide, spying on other countries.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;US allegations of Huawei using lawful interception are nothing but a smokescreen,&#8221; Huawei said in an emailed statement Wednesday. &#8220;Huawei has never and will never covertly access telecom networks, nor do we have the capability to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The White House didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/uk-gives-huawei-green-light-to-build-countrys-non-core-5g-network\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson approved Huawei for 5G<\/a><\/span> last month with some conditions: The British restrictions are to exclude Huawei from building core parts of the UK&#8217;s 5G networks, have Huawei&#8217;s market share capped at 35% and exclude Huawei from sensitive geographic locations. The <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/europe-allows-huawei-for-5g-through-security-guidelines\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">European Union allowed higher-risk vendors for 5G<\/a><\/span> with similar restrictions at the end of January.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei&#8217;s 5G approval there came despite the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/us-presses-british-officials-to-block-huawei-from-5g-network\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">US urging the UK to ban the Chinese telecommunications giant<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/huawei-says-blacklisting-will-significantly-harm-american-companies-jobs\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">Huawei was blacklisted<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in May when it was added to the United States&#8217; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2019-13245.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\">entity list<\/a>&#8221; (PDF). In addition, US President Donald Trump at the same time signed an\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/trump-effectively-bans-huawei-with-national-security-order\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">executive order essentially banning the company<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in light of national security concerns that\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/huawei-ban-full-timeline-us-government-britain-approves-non-core-5g-china-trump-ban-security-threat-mate-x\/\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body;shortcodeLink\">Huawei had close ties with the Chinese government<\/a><\/span>.
