{"id":17662,"date":"2020-05-13T14:27:41","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T21:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=17662"},"modified":"2020-05-13T14:45:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-13T21:45:03","slug":"bill-gates-backs-1-billion-plan-to-blanket-earth-in-video-surveillance-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=17662","title":{"rendered":"Bill Gates Backs $1 Billion Plan to Blanket Earth in Video Surveillance Satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"top-meta clearfix\">MARCH 24, 2020 at 5:26 PM<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Our planet will soon be surrounded by 500 satellites capable of real-time coverage of human activity and movement around the globe<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft founder Bill Gates is bankrolling a company that plans on launching a $1 billion network of satellites to provide live-streaming coverage of almost \u201ccorner\u201d of the earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthnow.com\/\">EarthNow<\/a> plans on launching <strong>500 plus satellites<\/strong> into our atmosphere, providing its users with near instantaneous video feedback with only one second of delay.<\/p>\n<p>While this may sound like something from a futuristic sci-fi movie, it is very much a real thing.<\/p>\n<p>All a customer of the surveillance network would have to do is flip on their smart phone or tablet to get instant, live access to what\u2019s going on in any part of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Users can watch the weather, detect forest fires the moment they start, watch volcanoes the instant they start to erupt and track the migration of large whales, the company boasts.<\/p>\n<p>While that all sounds benevolent enough, users can also<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cobserve conflict zones and respond immediately when crises arise, assist the media in telling stories from around the world, catch illegal fishing ships in the act, and instantly create \u201cliving\u201d 3D models of a town or city, even in remote locations.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe obvious big question is who are the \u201cusers\u201d of this technology. According to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EarthNow#cite_note-tc20180418-1\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/strong>, the company expects its initial customers to include \u201cgovernments and large enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EarthNow founder Russel Hannigan says his company\u2019s simple objective is to \u201cconnect people visually with the Earth in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11706 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/returntonow.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Unknown-1-1.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/returntonow.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Unknown-1-1.jpeg 285w, https:\/\/returntonow.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Unknown-1-1-89x55.jpeg 89w\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not only is Gates backing the project, but so too are tech giants Softbank, Airbus and Greg Wyler.<\/p>\n<p>The company expects a billion in funding but won\u2019t disclose the value of what\u2019s been contributed. Hannigan said the funding would cover the planning stage of the product.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_first-letter\">EarthNow isn\u2019t the only one receiving money for out-of-this-world technologies.
