{"id":18077,"date":"2020-05-24T02:29:33","date_gmt":"2020-05-24T09:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18077"},"modified":"2020-09-24T02:36:08","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T09:36:08","slug":"liberal-mp-who-chairs-health-committee-sponsors-petition-that-claims-cellphone-towers-might-kill-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18077","title":{"rendered":"Liberal MP Who Chairs Health Committee Sponsors Petition That Claims Cellphone Towers Might Kill Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Liberal MP&#8217;s petition is now being promoted by anti-lockdown protesters and 5G truther groups on Facebook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>May 5, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Liberal MP Ron McKinnon, the Chair of Canada\u2019s Standing Committee on Health, is currently sponsoring an online petition warning cellphone towers could cause cancer in children \u2014 and so far, he isn\u2019t walking it back.<\/p>\n<p>Petition <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/P1dyx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-2424<\/a> cites some dodgy science to suggest cell phone towers are causing cancer in children and calls on the government\u00a0to ban the \u201cinstallation of cellular towers \/ antennas within 305m of all schools and playgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal MP\u2019s online petition, which was opened for signatures on February 26 and runs until May 26, has been actively promoted in Facebook groups connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/meet-the-strange-and-mysterious-group-organizing-anti-lockdown-protests-across-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-lockdown protests<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/4ac3679b6f39e8bd2561c1c8eeafd855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conspiracy theories about 5G cell phone towers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, 5G cell towers around the world have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/coronavirus-conspiracy-5g-masts-fire-2020-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">torched by arsonists<\/a>inspired by online conspiracies claiming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/4\/24\/21231085\/coronavirus-5g-conspiracy-theory-covid-facebook-youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5G towers help spread COVID-19<\/a>. In the last week alone, arsonists have <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.ctvnews.ca\/cell-tower-fires-spread-across-quebec-fourth-in-four-days-1.4925873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">destroyed four 3G and 4G cell towers<\/a> in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/image-2020-05-07.jpg\" width=\"940\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In response to questions about what he personally thinks about the claims made by the petition and its backers, McKinnon issued a statement to <em>PressProgress<\/em> insisting he was only relaying his constituents\u2019 concerns to the government:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy constituents brought this petition to my attention and they can now gauge public support for their concerns. As sponsor of this petition I cannot sign it. My goal sponsoring this, on behalf of my constituents, is to bring their concerns to the attention of the government.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McKinnon\u2019s response also echoes a similar line used in the past by outgoing Green leader Elizabeth May, who also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/elizabeth-may-wages-war-against-wifi\/article617404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned of the dangers of WiFi<\/a>, previously claiming she was obligated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/elizabeth-may-presents-9-11-truther-petition-to-parliament-1.2133362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sponsor a 9\/11 truther petition<\/a> on behalf of her constituents.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, a disclaimer on the House of Commons website clearly states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is no obligation on the part of the House of Commons or any Member of Parliament to authorize the publication of an e-petition or to present an e-petition or a paper petition to the House of Commons.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/image-2020-05-08.jpg\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Liberal MP Ron McKinnon is Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health (House of Commons)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But as Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, McKinnon\u2019s sponsorship of the petition could lend the appearance of legitimacy to the dubious scientific claims that fuel 5G conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>And the only study cited by the petition hasn\u2019t received glowing peer reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Salzberg, a professor of biomedical engineering at John Hopkins University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevensalzberg\/2015\/01\/20\/wi-fi-exposure-isnt-killing-your-kids\/#6742c46d7e0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called the study<\/a> \u201cperhaps the <i>worst<\/i> scientific paper I have read in years\u201d and observed that \u201cit\u2019s not even written like a scientific paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo of the authors,\u201d Salzberg noted, \u201cwork for a private organization whose sole purpose seems to be to promote claims that cellphones and other wi-fi devices cause cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most scientific research stands at odds with the claims of the petition. The MIT Technology Review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2020\/02\/11\/844856\/no-theres-no-evidence-that-cell-phones-give-you-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> a survey by the American FDA reviewing nearly 250 studies on the effects of cellphones on humans and animals found \u201cno consistent pattern\u201d linking radiofrequency radiation to cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExisting epidemiological evidence indicates that if any risk does exist, it is extremely low compared to both the natural incidence of the disease and known controllable risk factors,\u201d the study found.<\/p>\n<p>The same has been noted, for the most part, by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/radiation-exposure\/cellular-phone-towers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Cancer Society<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/causes-of-cancer\/cancer-controversies\/do-mobile-phones-cause-cancer?utm_source=affiliate_window&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_name=online_retail&amp;utm_content=www.google.com&amp;awc=2584_1588693139_8e859eb13b329be2d7f650a0b61fe255&amp;dclid=CIKQm5KHnekCFUauTwodBuIHGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cancer Research UK, <\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/peh-emf\/research\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Health Organization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/radiation\/cell_phones._faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Centre For Disease Control and Preventio<\/a>n, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vch.ca\/public-health\/health-topics-a-z\/topics\/cell-tower-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Costal Health<\/a>, studies out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/jul\/21\/mobile-phones-are-not-a-health-hazard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxford,\u00a0<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/16\/science\/5g-cellphones-wireless-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more<\/a>. Health Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-risks-safety\/radiation\/everyday-things-emit-radiation\/cell-phones-towers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">itself<\/a> says \u201cRF energy from cell phones poses no confirmed health risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, McKinnon\u2019s suggestion that the petition is at least helpful in bringing these concerns to the attention of the government also seems a bit pointless considering the government already <a href=\"https:\/\/petitions.ourcommons.ca\/en\/Petition\/Details?Petition=e-404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">responded to a petition on the same topic<\/a> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Former Health Minister Jane Philpott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Content\/ePetitions\/Responses\/421\/e-404\/421-00824_HC_E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued a statement<\/a> that rejected any suggestion that \u201ccell phone towers\u201d pose any health risk to children:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf a person, including a small child, were to be exposed to RF energy from multiple sources for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, within the Safety Code 6 limits, there would be no adverse health effects.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Liberal MP&#8217;s petition is now being promoted by anti-lockdown protesters and 5G truther groups on Facebook May 5, 2020 Liberal MP Ron McKinnon, the Chair of Canada\u2019s Standing Committee on Health, is currently sponsoring an online petition warning cellphone towers could cause cancer in children \u2014 and so far, he isn\u2019t walking it back.
