{"id":18255,"date":"2020-10-29T11:11:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T18:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18255"},"modified":"2020-10-29T11:13:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T18:13:44","slug":"att-launches-5g-at-39-ghz-in-parts-of-milwaukee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18255","title":{"rendered":"AT&#038;T launches 5G at 39 GHz in parts of Milwaukee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/author\/monica-alleven\">Monica Alleven<\/a> | \u00a0<time datetime=\"2020-10-06T15:02:43Z\">Oct 6, 2020 11:02am<\/time><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 500;\">AT&amp;T introduced its \u201c5G+\u201d service in parts of downtown Milwaukee \u2013 a moniker the operator uses to signify the 5G service is delivered using millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 500;\">AT&amp;T was offering its 5G+ service only to business customers <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/5g\/at-t-expands-5g-opens-5g-service-to-consumers\">until this past March<\/a><\/b>, when it expanded its 5G+ service to consumers with the launch of Samsung\u2019s Galaxy S20 series. In <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/5g\/at-t-claims-nationwide-5g-40-new-markets\">July<\/a><\/b>, AT&amp;T claimed 5G coverage nationwide using sub-6 GHz spectrum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 500;\">According to AT&amp;T, the higher band spectrum means it\u2019s able to deliver \u201cunprecedented performance,\u201d such as download speeds of up to 1\u00a0Gbps.\u00a0The mmWave band AT&amp;T is using is 39 GHz, a spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers in Milwaukee are going to be blown away by their experience with AT&amp;T 5G+ on 5G+-enabled devices,\u201d said Tom Monahan, VPGM AT&amp;T Wisconsin, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/story\/2020\/5g_milwaukee.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe speeds we are seeing on our 5G+ network are impressive and will open up a wide range of opportunities and experiences for customers and businesses in Downtown Milwaukee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As with Verizon\u2019s mmWave 5G, which often uses\u00a0the 28 GHz band, AT&amp;T\u2019s 5G+ service has extremely limited coverage in the markets where it\u2019s launched. AT&amp;T\u2019s says it\u2019s well suited for providing coverage in densely populated and high-traffic areas like campuses, shopping areas, hospitals and other business locations.<\/p>\n<p>In downtown Milwaukee, new locations for AT&amp;T\u2019s 5G mmWave include Fiserv Forum, Miller Park and the Deer District. That brings AT&amp;T\u2019s mmWave 5G markets to parts of 36 cities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T got a head start, so to speak, on its 39 GHz holdings when it acquired FiberTower in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/wireless\/at-t-quietly-acquires-fibertower-for-24-39-ghz-spectrum\">2017<\/a>. But it also picked up a sizable amount in the last big millimeter wave auction that concluded in March. AT&amp;T was one of the top bidders in that auction, which combined the 37 GHz, 39 GHz and 47 GHz bands.\u00a0Bidding under FiberTower Spectrum Holdings, AT&amp;T won 3,267 licenses in 411 partial economic areas (PEAs), bidding about $2.38 billion.
