{"id":18704,"date":"2022-05-21T04:26:03","date_gmt":"2022-05-21T11:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18704"},"modified":"2023-07-25T06:09:33","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T13:09:33","slug":"canada-moves-to-ban-chinese-telecoms-from-5g","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=18704","title":{"rendered":"Canada moves to ban Chinese telecoms from 5G"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"detailHeadline\" lang=\"en\"><strong>Trudeau says Huawei, ZTE 5G ban took longer because government wanted to get it right<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"deck\" lang=\"en\">U.S. State Department welcomes Canada&#8217;s move to ban Chinese telecoms from 5G<\/h2>\n<div class=\"byline\">\n<div class=\"bylineDetails\"><span class=\"authorText\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/author\/peter-zimonjic-1.3689630\">Peter Zimonjic<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"bullet\">\u00b7 <\/span>CBC News <span class=\"bullet\">\u00b7 <\/span><time class=\"timeStamp\" datetime=\"2022-05-21T03:40:57.373Z\">Posted: May 20, 2022\u00a0<\/time><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada took longer that its allies did\u00a0to ban Chinese firms Huawei Technologies and ZTE from Canada&#8217;s 5G networks because the government wanted to make sure it was making the right move.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Sept-\u00celes Que. on Friday, Trudeau said the decision will serve to &#8220;ensure the safety of Canadians&#8221; online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We took the time to carefully analyze the situation, look at all sorts of factors, to look very closely at what our allies and partners were doing around the world in regards to telecommunications safety,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ban puts Canada in line with key intelligence allies like the United States, which have expressed concerns about the national security implications of giving the Chinese tech giant access to key infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is the last member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance \u2014 which includes the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand \u2014 to impose the ban.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/huawei-5g-decision-1.6310839\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Canada bans Chinese tech giant Huawei from 5G network<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/cong-peiwu-huawei-1.6276308\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">China&#8217;s ambassador warns that banning Huawei from 5G would send &#8216;a very wrong signal&#8217;<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/huawei-canada-china-fipa-1.5021033\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Banning Huawei from Canada&#8217;s 5G networks could be costly for taxpayers<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Critics warned\u00a0that Huawei&#8217;s participation in Canada&#8217;s 5G networks could give the company an inside look at how, when and where Canadians use internet-connected devices \u2014 and that the Chinese government could force the company to hand over that personal information.<\/p>\n<p>The government is also banning ZTE, another Chinese state-backed telecommunications firm. Companies will have until June 28, 2024\u00a0to remove or terminate 5G equipment from Huawei and ZTE.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll also have to remove or terminate any existing 4G equipment provided by the companies by Dec. 31, 2027. A government policy statement says Ottawa\u00a0expects companies to stop purchasing new 4G or 5G equipment from the companies by September of this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"storyWrapper\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<h2>More cyber security initiatives coming: PM<\/h2>\n<p>Trudeau said that to ensure Canada&#8217;s economy and telecommunications networks are safe, his government is working with financial institutions and companies across the country to boost cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve continued to invest more and more in cyber defence, in cyber capabilities and we will do more, whether it&#8217;s legislation or further investments or better and stronger partnerships,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. State Department said Friday\u00a0it welcomes Canada&#8217;s decision to ban Huawei Technologies and ZTE from its next-generation mobile networks.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the State Department\u00a0said it supports efforts around the world to ensure consumers and customers can trust their wireless networks and providers.
