{"id":19186,"date":"2022-10-18T14:24:25","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T21:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=19186"},"modified":"2023-08-31T15:17:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T22:17:54","slug":"radioactive-material-found-at-missouri-elementary-school-more-than-22-times-expected-amount","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=19186","title":{"rendered":"Radioactive material found at Missouri elementary school more than 22 times expected amount"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By <a class=\"byline__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/profiles\/michelle-watson\"><span class=\"byline__name\">Michelle Watson<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"byline__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/profiles\/tina-burnside\"><span class=\"byline__name\">Tina Burnside<\/span><\/a>, CNN<\/p>\n<p>Mon October 17, 2022<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E92877BD-D8CA-ECF0-876C-E618F51F760B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">An elementary school outside St. Louis was found to have \u201cunacceptable\u201d levels of radioactive contamination stemming from waste dating back to the creation of the first atomic bomb in the 1940s, and residents fear it may be linked to various cases of illness, disease, and deaths in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C9D3C60D-B1BE-0A2B-6DB1-E69B909F774D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/124fnZz3VJ2KozmhmbYiiedqaPKetRST9\/view?fbclid=IwAR27xGmY9pOC8ibjyIKe9eqg8gSrmQipfphY90rsxXngmRsv_Iucm1MJmns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent report from the Boston Chemical Data Corporation<\/a>, \u201cunacceptable\u201d radioactive levels were found throughout the Jana School in Florissant, Missouri.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_AB231119-D495-8318-F675-E69D9ED7C841@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">\u201cThe Jana School, like many homes, institutions and businesses in the area, borders Coldwater Creek. This waterway has been contaminated by leaking radioactive wastes from disposal that began shortly after World War II and is not yet cleaned up,\u201d said Marco Kaltofen, the author of the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F7F34B2D-E751-B272-F13A-E69DFDA52C82@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cThe wastes in the creek come from residues of the Manhattan Engineering District Project. Many properties in this area get tested with some regularity,\u201d Kaltofen told CNN. \u201cUnfortunately, when Coldwater Creek floods its banks, some of that radioactive material is deposited on neighboring land, such as the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3A19A45E-8934-BE55-D726-E6FC119307AD@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">In a statement Friday the school district said it was aware of the report. \u201cSafety is always our top priority, and we are actively discussing the implications of the findings. The Board of Education will be consulting with attorneys and experts in this area of testing to determine next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_54255A64-7CF2-EE28-BC41-E69EB6E0EF9C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">A school board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night. The PTA says it is working tirelessly to keep the area safe for its children. It\u2019s asking for letters to be written to community leaders and elected officials. The sample messaging reads:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_562834DB-D0BB-B57F-B585-E69EFB02DF55@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">\u201cThe radioactive contamination found inside Jana Elementary School and in the outside play area is an unacceptable threat. I am requesting an immediate cleanup of hazardous waste on Jana Elementary School property and building, in its entirety, to ensure the safety of our children, teachers, and school staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9B93AF91-9247-A1F1-E20E-E69F59440269@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">In August of this year, 32 soil, dust, and plant samples were taken from the school for the study. Samples were collected from places throughout the school such as the library, the ventilation system, and classroom surfaces.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe most outstanding result of August 2022 testing at the Jana school was that levels of the radioactive isotope lead-210 found on school grounds were entirely unacceptable,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The levels of radioactive lead, known as lead-210, found in the kindergarten playground were \u201cmore than 22 times the expected background,\u201d while lead-210 levels on the school\u2019s basketball courts were \u201cmore than 12 times the expected background,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_D001ADB4-9F7F-393C-BB0D-E69FC3063458@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body and can damage the brain and nervous system. It can slow growth and development and lead to learning and behavior problems including reduced IQ, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and hearing and speech problems. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/lead\/prevention\/health-effects.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no safe blood lead level<\/a> in children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B4DE62AD-097E-D36A-7D70-E69B7A500368@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Further, greater exposure to radioactive materials can lead to cancer later in life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/radiation\/emergencies\/cancer.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CDC<\/a>. A person can spread radioactive materials, like dust, to other people through their clothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E0A4F378-A48A-488C-4AA5-E6A0963A313F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">\u201cPeople who are externally contaminated can spread the contamination by touching surfaces, sitting in a chair, or even walking through a house. Contaminants can easily fall from clothing and contaminate other surfaces,\u201d the CDC explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_85BF5CCE-289F-2E8C-FC4D-E6E6C7E7C63A@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Low levels of radiation exist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/radiation\/sources.html#nature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naturally<\/a> and exposure is also possible from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/radiation\/sources.html#objects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everyday objects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"history-of-contamination-in-area\" class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/paragraph_2DF33380-B06C-432E-3710-E6A181297451@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">History of contamination in area<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_561AB589-1702-FE7B-D653-E6A18860FC4B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Jana Elementary School serves just over 400 students in Florissant, Missouri and sits near Coldwater Creek, which was contaminated with uranium processing residues used as part of the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb in the 1940s and 50s, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/sites\/coldwater_creek\/background.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry<\/a>, a federal public health agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F503589F-2E6A-8C41-631C-E6A1C0765A43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">The radioactive residues were improperly stored and led to the contamination of Coldwater Creek decades ago. The Jana School is bordered on two sides by the creek and one of its contaminated tributaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_EA1445C7-94B8-86C5-73E7-E6A1618AE025@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/sites\/coldwater_creek\/docs\/St_Louis_Airport_Site_Hazelwood_InterimSto_PHA-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 report<\/a> from the Agency, local residents alleged numerous illnesses and deaths they believed were connected to the site. However, the agency could not determine if any of those illnesses were definitively caused by exposure to the contaminants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_69D7FFA7-0D14-99D6-169D-E6A1652B7F6C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">\u201cRadiological contamination in and around Coldwater Creek, prior to remediation activities, could have increased the risk of some types of cancer in people who played or lived there,\u201d states the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7BDF5DF7-9117-409C-4778-E6A1652CCAF2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">The US Army Corps of Engineers initially detected radioactive material near school grounds in 2018, according to the independent report, and confirmed its presence with more testing between 2019 and 2021. But the Army Corps testing only included samples from outside the school, instead of on and inside the school property, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_25378F92-5A0A-3AE5-8AB6-E6A395EE764C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cOur team will evaluate the Boston Chemical Data Corp. report and methods used to create these results. The Boston Chemical Data Corp. report is not consistent with our accepted evaluation techniques and must be thoroughly vetted to ensure accuracy,\u201d said Phil Moser, program manager, US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_43848102-681D-4853-B718-E8CA979E5306@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cThe Jana Elementary School property does have FUSRAP contamination near the CWC bank that is below ground surface and in a densely wooded area.
