First wireless company in Canada to bring satellite connectivity to Canadians coast to coast<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Companies will deliver new service to connect 5G and 4G phones<\/strong> in remote areas without networks<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

TORONTO (April 26, 2023) \u2013\u00a0Rogers Communications Inc. and SpaceX<\/strong> today announced the companies have agreed\u00a0to bring satellite-to-phone\u00a0coverage\u00a0nation-wide to ensure Canadians\u00a0stay connected\u00a0in areas\u00a0beyond the limits of traditional wireless networks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rogers and SpaceX<\/strong>\u00a0will offer<\/strong>\u00a0satellite-to-phone technology in Canada using SpaceX\u2019s Starlink low earth orbit satellites and Rogers national wireless spectrum<\/strong>. The companies plan to start with satellite coverage for\u00a0SMS text and will eventually provide voice and data\u00a0across the country\u2019s most remote wilderness, national parks and rural highways\u00a0that are unconnected today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs the country\u2019s biggest investor in 5G spectrum with Canada\u2019s largest 5G network, Rogers is proud to work with SpaceX to\u00a0expand wireless coverage\u00a0across all of Canada,\u00a0from coast to coast, to keep Canadians connected and safe,\u201d said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO, Rogers.\u00a0\u201cIn the future, these investments will deliver wireless connectivity, including access to 911, to even the most remote areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Once commercially available, satellite-to-phone coverage\u00a0will work with\u00a0all 5G and 4G smartphones. The coverage will support SMS and MMS text, and help all Canadians\u00a0reach 911 as first responders and emergency services upgrade their systems for emergency SMS texting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rogers\u00a0is committed to improving public safety through its national network investments. This includes the company\u2019s commitment to bring wireless service and 911 access throughout the entire Toronto subway system for all TTC riders and extend wireless coverage along Canada\u2019s remote highways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s announcement builds on the company\u2019s investment to bring Canadians the largest 5G wireless network covering more than 2,000 communities. Through its transformative merger with Shaw, Rogers now brings Canadians a national coast to coast wireline network with fibre-powered internet available to nearly 70% of Canadian households.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Free trial of satellite-to-text service will make back country more accessible to everyday people: expert<\/h2>\n

A free satellite-to-mobile text service is available to all Canadians \u2013 on all mobile carriers \u2013 through a beta trial that runs until October.<\/p>\n

Rogers Communications Inc. announced the new satellite text service last month as part of its partnership with SpaceX and Lynk Global, which will eventually deliver full satellite-to-phone coverage across apps, data and voice service.<\/p>\n

The service uses SpaceX\u2019s Starlink low-earth orbit satellites and Rogers\u2019 national wireless spectrum, allowing mobile phones to connect in areas without cell service and stay connected in remote locations and along rural roads.<\/p>\n
