Education Report<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The B.C. Teachers\u2019 Federation (BCTF) is headed for what will likely be a hot debate about health worries regarding wi-fi in schools.<\/p>\n<p>The Nicola Valley Teachers\u2019 Union has submitted a resolution to the BCTF annual general meeting in mid-March, calling for wired connections rather than wireless and\/or routers with on-off switches in all schools, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kamloopsnews.ca\/article\/20130306\/KAMLOOPS0101\/130309901\/-1\/kamloops01\/merritt-teachers-demand-protection-from-wi-fi-radiation\">a story in the Kamloops Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>No one disagrees that wireless routers and wireless laptops and tablets emit radiation, however evidence is piling up that wi-fi radiation may in fact be harmf<\/em>ul,\u201d teacher <strong>Yvonne Lord<\/strong> is quoted as saying. Teachers are calling for more testing to prove wireless is safe, the story says.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been suggestions that each B.C. school district should have one elementary school and one secondary school that are free of Wi-Fi so that families have choice, says the story by <strong>Sylvie Paillard. <\/strong>That fits with <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.vancouversun.com\/2012\/05\/28\/parents-vote-against-wi-fi-in-b-c-schools\/\">a position endorsed last ye<\/a>ar by the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils.<\/p>\n<p>This issue has also been the subject of much discussion in the Victoria school district. Trustees <strong>Deborah Nohr<\/strong> and <strong>Diane McNally<\/strong> have tweeted this week about a parent information meeting Thursday night to discuss wi-fi in schools. (7 p.m. at the Victoria West Community Centre.)<\/p>\n<p>As far as I know, Saanich is still the only B.C. school district that has a policy restricting wi-fi use in its elementary schools.<\/p>\n<p>The BCTF <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.vancouversun.com\/2011\/01\/26\/bctf-chided-for-articles-warning-of-wi-fi-danger\/\">was hit with criticism <\/a>the last time it dipped into this issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.vancouversun.com\/2013\/03\/07\/health-concerns-about-school-wi-fi-to-be-aired-at-b-c-teachers-meeting\/\">http:\/\/blogs.vancouversun.com\/2013\/03\/07\/health-concerns-about-school-wi-fi-to-be-aired-at-b-c-teachers-meeting\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 7, 2013. 11:35 am \u2022 Section: B.C.
