{"id":4358,"date":"2013-06-16T20:57:26","date_gmt":"2013-06-17T03:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=4358"},"modified":"2019-04-12T21:27:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-13T04:27:57","slug":"osoyoos-indian-band-prohibits-smart-meter-installations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=4358","title":{"rendered":"Osoyoos Indian Band Prohibits Smart Meter Installations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Okanagan First Nation Bans Fortis from installing Smart meters <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OLIVER\/CKNW (AM980)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laura Baziuk <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">6\/13\/2013 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another group in B.C. has come out fiercely opposed to smart meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Osoyoos Indian Band says its council has voted to ban Fortis BC from installing the electricity meters at its 700 homes and businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The chief, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarence_Louie\">Clarence Louie<\/a>, says &#8220;science-based evidence&#8221; has convinced his and council the radiation emitted by the wireless meters could harm their children and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fortis serves separate regions of British Columbians than BC Hydro, which has also installed smart meters to much opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fortis applied to the BC Utilities Commission last summer to be able to install their own meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If approved, it would start switching out the old for the new starting next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spokesman Neil Pobran says the utility is aware of the band&#8217;s decision, but adds it&#8217;s a bit premature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;We will work with customers that are concerned if we do get an approval and we&#8217;ll take it as a first step, but as we&#8217;re talking right now we don&#8217;t have a project to begin yet.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pobran says Health Canada and the provincial health officer approve of the meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He adds Fortis expects a decision from the commission by the end of the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cknw.com\/news\/vancouver\/story.aspx?ID=1983915\"><strong>http:\/\/www.cknw.com\/news\/vancouver\/story.aspx?ID=1983915<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Download \u00a0PDF<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Osoyoos-PressReleaseonSmartmeters.pdf\">Osoyoos &#8211; Press Release on Smart meters<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Okanagan First Nation Bans Fortis from installing Smart meters OLIVER\/CKNW (AM980) Laura Baziuk 6\/13\/2013 Another group in B.C. has come out fiercely opposed to smart meters.
