{"id":6566,"date":"2015-05-22T16:22:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T23:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=6566"},"modified":"2015-05-22T16:23:59","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T23:23:59","slug":"scientists-cant-all-be-quacks-as-rdos-calls-for-moratorium-on-smart-meters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emrabc.ca\/?p=6566","title":{"rendered":"Scientists &#8216;can&#8217;t all be quacks,&#8217; as RDOS calls for moratorium on smart meters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"blox-story-frame\">\n<div id=\"blox-story-media\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"blox-story-photo-container\">\n<div id=\"instantGallery\"><a title=\"Still smarting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pentictonherald.ca\/news\/article_ce577212-001e-11e5-b797-9307519dae0d.html?mode=image&amp;photo=0\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Still smarting\" src=\"http:\/\/bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com\/pentictonherald.ca\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/1\/3d\/13dfb3f8-001f-11e5-a57b-23c4a2cd0267\/555e81dba96fe.image.jpg?resize=300%2C239\" width=\"300\" data-height=\"604\" data-width=\"760\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.17em; line-height: 1.5em;\">Still smarting<\/span>Osoyoos man Jacob de Raadt had his power cut off after refusing to accept a new smart meter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Posted:\u00a0Thursday, May 21, 2015 6:06 pm<\/p>\n<p>JOE FRIES\u00a0| \u00a0<a id=\"comment_ce577212-001e-11e5-b797-9307519dae0d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pentictonherald.ca\/news\/article_ce577212-001e-11e5-b797-9307519dae0d.html#user-comment-area\">comments<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"blox-story-text\">\n<div id=\"paging_container\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Persistent concerns about smart meters have prompted a group of local politicians to call on the B.C. government to pull the plug on further installations of the devices in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to be silent, but sometimes it\u2019s important to take a stand and get a message out, and it doesn\u2019t have to be based on perfect information,\u201d said Tom Siddon, who led the push for an immediate moratorium from his seat as the Area D director on the board of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Siddon\u2019s motion, which passed Thursday by a 12-5 vote, also calls on<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> FortisBC to remove at its own cost those meters, which wirelessly relay usage data back to the company, already installed on houses in Area D<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Among his many concerns are the safety certification process for the meters used by FortisBC and debate among scientists about whether current\u00a0 health guidelines for devices that emit electromagnetic radiation do enough to protect the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most of the RDOS board members who spoke on the issue acknowledged they don\u2019t know enough about the science to make an informed decision, but chose to support Siddon out of an abundance of caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Summerland Mayor Peter Waterman said to simply walk away from the issue would be \u201ca cop-out,\u201d and noted the growing number of scientists who are urging caution around devices that emit electromagnetic radiation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTo get this many scientists saying one thing, they can\u2019t all be quacks,\u201d said Waterman.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Opposition to the moratorium was led by Area F Director Michael Brydon, who pointed out that many of the assertions in Siddon\u2019s motion\u00a0 are labelled \u201cmyths\u201d in a fact sheet posted on Health Canada\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe only conclusion I can make if I accept this (motion) is that Health Canada is corrupt or incompetent. And if we\u2019re going to go there, we need to go there. Otherwise, we should stay out of it,\u201d said Brydon.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four other votes in opposition were registered by Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit and Coun. Helena Konanz, Osoyoos Coun. CJ Rhodes and Keremeos Mayor Manfred Bauer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FortisBC spokesman David Wylie said in a statement the company has previously presented its smart meter plan to the RDOS and received approval from the B.C. Utilities Commission, which \u201cconcluded that advanced meters pose no health concern,\u201d and that the project \u201cis in the public interest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhile the RDOS is not the first B.C.
