The Mohawk community of Kanesatake has said no to the installation of new Hydro-Quebec smart meters, and for the time being, the utility is listening.<\/p>\n

Radio-Canada<\/em>\u00a0is reporting that Grand Chief Serge Simon told Hydro workers himself that it would be in their best interest to leave.<\/p>\n

Simon said that some men in the community were looking for them.<\/p>\n

The workers packed up their tools and left.<\/p>\n

Hydro-Quebec then warned employees last week not to install the new meters in Kanesatake because of security reasons.<\/p>\n

The band council said there are fears for certain members of the community who are more sensitive to pollutants.<\/p>\n

It asked Hydro-Quebec how much it would cost to produce an independent study on the impact of the smart meters.<\/p>\n

According to a spokesperson with the utility, there will be a meeting with band council members in the coming weeks to go over the results of studies that currently exist.<\/p>\n

The Band Council though remain steadfast; no new meters will be installed without its consent.<\/p>\n
