Smart meters cause\u00a0a \u201c<\/b>cornucopia\u00a0of health issues<\/i>\u201d for occupants of the 57 million American homes equipped with the new technology, according to the World Health Organization and Cancer.org.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The news comes after a major university study into the \u201csmart meter scam<\/i>\u201d revealed that the new meters regularly\u00a0\u201covercharge consumers by up to 582%<\/b><\/a>\u201d while at the same time collecting owner\u2019s data which is then sold to third parties for further profit.<\/p>\n

Electric utilities have embraced smart meters, pushing aggressively\u00a0for the mass rollout of the wireless technology. Roughly 65 million of the devices have been installed in the United States over the last few years, with 57 million in consumer homes.<\/p>\n

Disturbingly, the\u00a0government plans to have a smart meter in every home by 2020, despite the World Health Organization and Cancer.org\u2019s dire warnings about the meter\u2019s\u00a0negative impact on health.<\/p>\n

Smart meters health problems<\/b><\/p>\n

In recent years there have been increasing reports that smart meters \u2013 the digitized electric meters that are designed to send usage figures to power companies wirelessly \u2013 are causing a range of health issues among a growing portion of the population where such devices are in use.<\/p>\n

In fact, notes\u00a0the EMF Safety Network<\/b><\/a>, a growing number of people from around the world are beginning to report health problems they believe are related to an increased amount of\u00a0wireless radiation<\/b><\/a>\u00a0from various devices, including smart meters.<\/p>\n

\u201cUtilities claim smart meters are safe, and compare them to cell phones. However, cell phones, cell towers, wi-fi and other wireless devices can also affect your health<\/i>,\u201d the organization states on its website. \u201cReducing your EMF exposure can benefit your overall health and wellness.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

The group also notes that the World Health Organization has classified radiation as a 2B carcinogen, and based that declaration on studies that have linked cell phone radiation to brain tumors.<\/p>\n

As noted by Cancer.org, here is how the devices work:<\/p>\n

\u201cSmart meters talk to their central systems using RF transmissions, based on a cell phone, pager, satellite, radio, power line (PLC), Wi-Fi or Internet (TCP\/IP) communication method. Internet and cell phone applications have become the preferred options because of their flexibility and ease of deployment<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cancer.org notes further that smart meters are typically installed outside homes and places of business to measure electricity, water and gas usage. How much RF energy\u00a0people\u00a0are exposed to depends on how far they are from the antenna that transmits the signal.<\/p>\n

The power and frequency of the RF signal emitted from smart meters are similar to those of a typical cellular phone, cordless phone or residential Wi-Fi router. These meters typically send and receive short messages about 1 percent of the time.<\/p>\n

Cancer.org notes that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) named RF radiation as \u201cpossibly\u00a0carcinogenic\u00a0to humans<\/i><\/a>,\u201d based on findings of at least one study that examined a link between it and a particular type of brain tumor.<\/p>\n

In addition, the EMF Safety Network has identified the following symptoms as possibly linked to RF radiation, based on a survey the group did in 2011:<\/p>\n

\u2013Sleep problems (insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, night waking, nightmares)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Stress, agitation, anxiety, irritability<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Headaches, sharp pain or pressure in the head<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Ringing in the ears, ear pain, high pitched ringing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Concentration, memory or learning problems<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Fatigue, muscle or physical weakness<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Disorientation, dizziness, or balance problems<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Eye problems, including eye pain, pressure in the eyes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Cardiac symptoms, heart palpitations, heart arrhythmias, chest pain<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Leg cramps, or neuropathy<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Arthritis, body pain, sharp, stabbing pains<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Nausea, flu-like symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Sinus problems, nose bleeds<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Respiratory problems, cough, asthma<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Skin rashes, facial flushing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Urinary problems<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Endocrine disorders, thyroid problems, diabetes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013High blood pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Changes in menstrual cycle<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Hyperactivity or changes in children\u2019s behavior<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Seizures<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013Recurrence of cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are smart meters safe?<\/b><\/p>\n

Many are skeptical that smart meters cause cancer or any of the problems listed in the EMF Safety Network\u00a0survey<\/b><\/a>, but the activist organization Stop Smart Meters, which opposes their use, says some people \u201chave or develop symptoms of physical distress in the presence of electro-magnetic or radio-frequency fields (or both).<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many symptoms associated with this type of sensitivity, and the main key in determining whether EMF fields are the cause of the problem is seeing what happens when you lessen or avoid exposure<\/i>,\u201d the group says on its\u00a0website<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The group also noted that it has been unable to ascertain from the federal government whether or not the condition falls under the Americans With Disabilities Act.<\/p>\n
