Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda claimed that one electric vehicle (EV) produces emissions equivalent to three hybrid cars, sparking debate.

His argument hinges on lifecycle emissions, particularly in regions like Japan, where electricity often comes from fossil fuel-heavy grids, such as coal and natural gas.

EV production, especially battery manufacturing, involves energy-intensive mining of lithium, cobalt, and nickel, resulting in higher initial carbon emissions—approximately 11-14 metric tonnes of CO2 compared to 6-9 tonnes for hybrids.

Toyoda suggests that hybrids, which use smaller batteries and combine electric motors with efficient gasoline engines, have a lower environmental impact, especially in markets with less clean energy.

However, studies, including those from Argonne National Laboratory and Nature, show EVs offset their higher production emissions after 19,500-45,000 km of driving, depending on the grid’s carbon intensity.

In regions with cleaner grids, like parts of the U.S. or China (where non-fossil energy is rising), EVs emit significantly less over their lifetime—up to 73% less than gasoline cars and lower than hybrids.

Toyoda’s claim may hold in specific fossil-fuel-reliant contexts, but globally, EVs are cleaner long-term. His “multi-pathway” approach, favoring hybrids alongside EVs, reflects Toyota’s strategy to balance practicality and emissions reduction in diverse markets.
