Fortis Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project in progress
British Columbia customers should know that their Gas Meter will be changed out for a new wireless gas meter between 2025 and 2028.
FortisBC states on their website that there is NO OPT OUT, however they state they do have the “Radio Off” option, which includes a monthly fee.

Fortis Alberta is also upgrading Smart Meters to the new Sensus FlexNet with WIFI

The Clean Energy Act and B.C. Reg. 368/2010 require smart meters that transmit information “in digital form.” The word “wireless” does not appear in either instrument. BC Hydro’s own website calls a radio-off meter “a smart meter.” The restriction preventing customers from switching exists only in BC Hydro’s Electric Tariff — not in the legislation — and the tariff itself says statutes prevail over its Terms and Conditions.
In its formal response to the BCUC, BC Hydro stated on the record that “meter readings can only be sent digitally if the meter uses wireless communication.” That is provably false — their own radio-off meters transmit data digitally through an optical port every day.
The BCUC closed my file without addressing any of this. I’ve filed with the BC Ombudsperson and my MLA’s office has asked BC Hydro to identify the specific legislative provision that prevents a radio-off meter. They haven’t been able to.
